Cardiologists play a collaborative role in the management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and, therefore, should be knowledgeable about the interrelated risks of diabetes, glycemic control, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Cardiovascular (CV) drugs can alter glycemic variables, and antihyperglycemic agents may alter CV parameters. As experts on CVD, cardiologists and related healthcare providers should be aware of the clinically important differences in CV outcomes reported for the major classes of agents used to treat CVD and T2DM. This timely symposium will review the effects of antihyperglycemic agents used in the management of T2DM on CV risk factors and outcomes. This interactive symposium will alternate between didactic presentations and case-based discussion segments. The presentations will examine specific effects of various antihyperglycemic agents on CV risk factors and outcomes, while the case presentations will differ in clinical complexity and will be discussed from multiple perspectives: cardiologist, endocrinologist, and primary care physician. Participants will be able to submit questions to the expert faculty throughout the symposium.
